Northern Territory

Having 20% of the entire Australian area and home to just 1% of the nation’s population, welcome to the Northern Territory, the most barren State of Australia. The area of 1.35 million square kilometers and the population of 182,000 do not tell the entire story of Northern Territory. More than one quarter of the population of the Northern Territory comprises of Indigenous Australians (Aboriginals).

Northern Territory has abundance of natural features that are both attractive and unique to this part of the world. Most of the population is settled alongside the capital side of Darwin.

The natural rock formations of Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) are sacred to the Aboriginals and are a major tourist attraction. The color of the soil is mostly red and that’s why the Central Australian region is known as The Red Center. The visitors can relish gorgeous canyons, valleys and meteorite craters.

The Stuart Highway is the major road link in this part of Australia and some very interesting places are located alongside the road.

The region of Top End is home to vast Arnhem Land belonging to the Aboriginals. Kakadu National Park is another highlight of Top End, but the best place here is the Tiwi Islands, home to the Tiwi people.

Some other spots and activities of tourists’ interest at the Northern Territory includes Katherine, Kings Canyon, annual Camel Racing, and numerous National Parks and protected areas that dot the entire State. The area is also known for its mining activities and is rich in Uranium, Bauxite, Manganese and Iron Ore.
