The city is a historical site with most of the developments taking place post-1871 when gold was found at nearby Pine Creek. The evidence of World War II history is still available at various preserved sites, including ammunition bunkers, airstrips and oil tunnels in and around the city. Darwin was destroyed substantially by Cyclone Tracy in 1974 and was rebuilt.
Situated on a peninsula with sea on three sides, Darwin is a beautiful city base to explore the natural attractions around the region. The life in the city mostly revolves around the Central Business District (CBD). The city has some excellent bicycle tracks to rove around the area and it also offers some good views of the harbor.
The best place for nature lovers at Darwin is the 1500 square kilometers Litchfield National Park that contains lush monsoon forests, exquisite waterfalls, cascades and rock formations, besides the native flora and fauna.
For adventure enthusiasts, there are Melville and Bathurst Islands (collectively known as Tiwi Islands), which lie 80 kilometers north of Darwin. The islands are rich in pristine beaches and dense rainforests. Home to the Tiwi people, the Islands are also rich in cultural heritage.
