The town of Broome is perhaps the landmark in this part of Western Australia. Broome was once the pearling capital of the world and the population here is the result of prospectors coming to the town in the hope of striking it rich. In the present times, Broome is more famous for 22-kilometer long pure white Cable Beach.
Close to Broome, Kimberley is located on the northern part of Western Australia and covers an estimated area of 424,000 square kilometers, which is about twice the size of England. With a population of just around 35,000, Kimberley is one of the world’s last great wilderness areas.
Bordered on the west by the Indian Ocean, on the north by the Timor Sea, on the south by the Great Sandy and on the east by the Northern Territory, Kimberley has an awesome landscape and an inviting weather during the months of April to September.
Mining is big business at Kimberley. An estimated one-third of world’s annual production of diamonds is mined at the Argyle and the Ellendale diamond mines here. Other mining products include oil, natural gas, zinc and lead.
Water adventures are obviously one of the highlights at Kimberley. The coral atolls of the Rowley Shoals are renowned for the untouched coral gardens and abundant marine life. A cruise through picturesque Geike Gorge, formed by the Fitzroy River, reveals some ancient coral reef. Lake Argyle, Mitchell Falls and Windjana Gorge are not-to-be-missed spots.
